1. Sterifx - Shreveport, Louisiana
Sterifx is a Shreveport, Louisiana-based specialty chemical company whose recently developed nontoxic disinfectant has applications in industry, healthcare and homeland defense. The new product, Fx™, disinfects and sterilizes surgical equipment without heating, extends the shelf life of foods and also can be used as a disinfectant for personal and household items. In terms of military defense, a grant from the Department of Defense was recently awarded to Sterifx to develop their product for use as a cold sterilant in the field, as well as for self-treatment of combat wounds. This product is not only nontoxic to humans and animals, but is also considered environmentally friendly.

2. EMS Technologies, Inc. - Atlanta, Georgia
According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, EMS Technologies Inc. manufactures key pieces of satellite communications systems, including switching networks, modulators and signal nulling subsystems. This Atlanta-based company counts Lockheed Martin among its many important contracts. Their most recent contract, valued at $22 million, charges the company to build the Beam Forming Network, a series of satellites for the US Department of Defense to be used for a communications constellation. In addition to Space and Technology group projects, EMS also has hardware production contracts with the United States government, as well as with private and international companies.

6. Camber Corporation - Huntsville, Alabama
Camber Corporation, a Huntsville-based company, specializes in engineering, management consulting and the development of information technology. Since its inception in 1990, Camber has grown to include over 20 national offices and lists the Department of Defense among its large number of government and commercial business customers. Camber is an important player in the country's efforts to protect against terrorism. One important innovation developed by Camber is a system used to detect airborne chemicals. In 2001, following the September 11th attack on the United States, Camber was called upon to use this suitcase-sized system to detect anthrax in government buildings, and has been instrumental in the development and application of antiterrorism measures nationwide.
